Layers Upon Layers
Oh, my, my. Mary Deal is a writers writer. Although I'm not the usual fan of romance novels, if Mary Deal writes it I know it's going to have completely fleshed out characters. Sea Cliff is a romance book of a writer writing a book about a writer writing a book. If that's not enough to start with, you'll find the characters of Rachael and Matthew have so many layers you could compare them to an onion...with the accompanying pre-requisite tears. Like I said, I'm not normally a romance fan, but it was difficult to put this book down so I could continue working on my own book.
Plus, Mary Deal does her usual in-depth research. In addition to being an author myself, I spent 45 years of my life in front of a camera or behind a mike as an actor/director with over 300 commercials (mostly in front of the camera) under my belt in addition to my movies and TV shows. Her treatment of the filming of a number of commercials for Matthew was right on the mark...I was there!. I have this thing about realistic dialogue...Mary Deal also hits the mark there. Sea Cliff is a must read.
